Their SONG, Our SONG, My SONG

“My SONG is a choreographic quest in search of my personhood. To find My SONG is to expand my personhood beyond the expectations of society. As a person of color, I have had the privilege and burden of representing bodies of color, which is a preconceived notion that reduces my individuality. The objective here is to emancipate myself from internal constraints and challenge the political and social structures that program the way we interact, and re-instate difference as a value to art and society.”

This project is the continuation of a series of collaborations with the Zimbabwean choreographer Tendai Makurumbandi.

Μy Song has a very special starting point; the roots, the culture, and the identity of the choreographer. Therefore it requires in-depth research and understanding, as well as an attempt to create a harmonious interweaving and dialogue of ideas.

During the performance, the costumes will be the vehicle that will expand and re-imagine the idea of identity. The space itself will be transformed through an interactive scenography representing different phases of the journey.
